The United Nations News Centre, the official media arm of the organization, swiftly removed a post to Twitter on Thursday urging the “8 million Americans abroad” to “stop” Donald Trump from winning the presidency in November.

The tweet called on American expats to circulate a voter registration tool on the activist website Avaaz that says, “U.S. citizens abroad could defeat Trump … if they vote,” Politico reported. The nongovernmental organization promotes advocacy for issues including climate change and human rights.

“At a time when Trump is trying to divide us, we could help defeat him if we all share this page with EVERYONE. Let’s reach every US voter abroad,” the site reads.

2.6 Million Americans Living Abroad Can Vote This Year; Overseas Vote Pivotal in Florida in 2000

(CNSNews.com) – Over the coming weeks, state authorities across the nation will be responding to requests from hundreds of thousands of Americans living abroad for absentee ballots allowing them to have their say in November’s election.

The deadline for requesting ballots varies depending on the state, but for most it falls between mid-October and early November.

The federal government estimates there are 5.7 million American citizens living abroad, of whom 2.6 million can vote in November. How many will is anybody’s guess, although the last couple of election cycles recorded very low turnouts from civilian Americans overseas.

Americans abroad are not officially counted in the census, and accurate figures of civilians among them are notoriously hard to come by. Using varying methods of counting, estimates vary widely – from some 2.2 million, according to the World Bank, to around 8.7 million according to the State Department.Scissors-32x32.png
