by Jay Root Aug. 31, 2016

With the likely election of a new Democratic sheriff in November, Austin is poised to become the first true “sanctuary city” in GOP-ruled Texas if Travis County stops cooperating with federal immigration policies. Scissors-32x32.png

@clearvision, it sounds like it is either time for you and Rheo to get out of Austin or spear head a campaign to get Martinez elected. Too late?

Don't actually live in Austin, but in a burb on its border in a different county.

Still going to affect you, no doubt. We don't live in Seattle, but we are certainly affected by all the crazy things the people there vote through! Even Pollyannaish clear across the state is affected.

We are a blue state--BUT, did you see how many people turned out for Trump's rally in Everett (30 miles north of Seattle) yesterday? The local ABC affiliate went on and on about how many protesters were there, but when they showed an overhead helicopter view, there weren't more than about 100. It was most certainly a very biased report and very much irked me. I turned it off. lightningbolt.gif

They gave out 13,000 tickets to the event and at least 10,000 showed up. That is the number of seats at that venue, but the news reports said people were having to stand outside so more than 10,000 showed up. smile.png

Travis County Sheriff Questions Likely Successor’s Immigration Policy

by Alana Rocha Sept. 24, 2016

The departing sheriff of Travis County warned Saturday that his likely successor's promise to stop cooperating with federal immigration authorities would be "dangerous."

During an onstage interview at the Texas Tribune Festival, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton questioned the wisdom of campaign promises by fellow Democrat Sally Hernandez, a constable considered all but certain to win the spot in November.

Hamilton, who is not seeking re-election, has faced criticism for cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement by holding onto immigrants in the county jail so the agency can pick them up.

“I have taken a lot of heat, but I have a moral compass. I think we’re keeping the community safe,” he told Tribune reporter Jay Root.

Last month, during a sit-down interview, Hernandez told the Tribune that she doesn’t think “you solve the criminal justice process by deporting them.”

Should she beat her Republican opponent, Joe Martinez, in November – as expected – such a policy would make Austin the first true “sanctuary city” in Republican-dominated Texas. Scissors-32x32.png

Court's immigration ruling could affect Texas "sanctuary city" debate

An Illinois judge ruled that federal officials can't ask local jails to hold on to possible criminal immigrants without a warrant. The ruling could put a dent in the federal government's efforts to deport criminal immigrants and reshape debates over "sanctuary cities."

Travis County Jail at election-year crossroads on immigration policy

By Philip Jankowski - American-Statesman Staff

Posted: 12:00 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016

The era of full cooperation with federal immigration authorities at the Travis County Jail is poised to come to an end in January with the likely election of Constable Sally Hernandez, the Democratic candidate for sheriff who has said she won’t honor all requests to turn over undocumented immigrants.

It’s a position that immigration activists have championed since retiring Sheriff Greg Hamilton announced in 2008 that agents at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement would have unfettered access to the jail.

“This is years in the making,” said Bob Libal, executive director of the criminal justice reform group Grassroots Leadership. “If whoever the sheriff is adopts a policy like many of these other communities around the country that limits ICE’s ability, that is a good thing for immigrants, and it is a good thing for public safety.” Scissors-32x32.png http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/crime-law/travis-county-jail-at-election-year-crossroads-on-/nszZN/

Travis County elects Hernandez as new sheriff

Last update on November 9, 2016 at 2:01 am

By Will Clark

Voters elected Sally Hernandez for Travis County Sheriff in a landslide victory to succeed the 12-year incumbent Greg Hamilton.

Hernandez, who earned 62.11 percent of the vote according to the Travis County Clerk’s Office, celebrated at the Driskill Hotel.

“I look forward to building partnerships with agencies and officials to address challenges like the growing population of inmates with mental health issues, assault family violence crimes and ending the school to prison pipeline,” Hernandez said in an email.

Hernandez currently serves as Travis County Precinct 3 Constable and was an investigator at the Travis County district attorney’s office for 21 years. Scissors-32x32.png

In her first few days as sheriff, Hernandez said she plans to lower the number of inmates in the Travis county jails. Scissors-32x32.png

‘Sanctuary city’ bill filed as Senate priority

By Chuck Lindell - American-Statesman Staff

Posted: 5:53 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016

Highlights

Under the bill, cities that block enforcement of immigration laws would lose state money.

‘Sanctuary city’ bill will be a priority in 2017, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says.

A bill filed Tuesday would require Texas cities to enforce federal immigration laws or risk losing state money.

The legislation by state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, seeks to short circuit “sanctuary city” policies that prohibit or discourage police, jail personnel, prosecutors and other officials from inquiring into the immigration status of anybody who has been arrested or detained.

“By electing a Republican president and Republican majorities in Congress, the American people made it clear that solving our illegal immigration crisis must be a priority,” Perry said in a statement. “That starts by eliminating sanctuary cities, securing our border and enforcing the immigration laws we currently have on the books.” Scissors-32x32.png
