Sanders Says He’ll Vote for Clinton in November Because Trump ‘Would Be a Disaster’

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) said Friday that he’ll vote for his rival, Hillary Clinton, in the general election.

 

Sanders, who has technically remained in the race despite admitting Thursday night that he will likely not be his party’s nominee, told MSNBC that electing Republican Donald Trump “would be a disaster” for U.S. interests around the globe.

 

When an anchor asked him if his vote would be one for Clinton or against Trump, the Vermont senator backed off his original statement a bit.

 

“Well, I don’t want to parse words right now,” he said, adding that his priority is making the Democratic Party’s platform reflect his campaign focus of representing the working class, raising the minimum wage and getting Wall Street out of politics.

 

But the Democratic socialist added that he’s “pretty good at arithmetic,” suggesting that his continued campaign is more about the issues than about trying to win.

 

“Why would I want to do that when I want to fight to make sure that we have the best platform that we possibly can, that we win the most delegates that we can?” he said. “What we want to do is reinvigorate the Democratic Party.”
