VENDETTA —PART I

May 16, 2016 · by Mustang · in Arizona, History, Old West · 6 Comments

Following a lengthy and very volatile feud, Tombstone, Arizona Town Marshal Virgil Earp, Assistant Town Marshal Morgan Earp, and temporary deputies Wyatt Earp and John H. “Doc” Holliday confronted Cochise County Cowboys Billy Claiborne, Ike and Billy Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury. At issue was the fact that Tombstone’s city council had signed into law Tombstone Ordinance No. 9, prohibiting the carrying of firearms inside the town limits. Earp demanded the Cowboys surrender their guns. The Cowboys responded by drawing their weapons and initiating a gunfight. The 30-second gunfight resulted in the death of three Cowboys, and the wounding of Virgil, Morgan, and Doc Holliday.

Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne ran from the fight claiming that they were unarmed. Witnesses at the shooting, however, claimed that Ike did have a firearm as he attempted to back-shoot the Earps as he fled through Fly’s Boarding House. Nevertheless, four days after the shootout, Ike Clanton filed charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday, alleging murder. Clanton claimed that the Cowboys were unarmed.
