ALTOONA, Wis. (AP) — Donald Trump is trying to defy convention yet again in the 2016 race for president — this time, by winning an election in Wisconsin without the support of the state's influential conservative talk radio hosts.

The Republican front-runner tried to lay some groundwork for his campaign in interviews Monday with three of the state's leading conservative talkers, including WTMJ radio's Charlie Sykes — to whom Trump confessed on-air not knowing that Sykes is a leading voice against his candidacy. Two interviews later in the day didn't go much better.

It's fair to assume Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker won't be announcing he's voting for Trump in the state's April 5 primary when the Milwaukee-based Sykes interviews the two-term Republican on Tuesday morning.

"It's remarkable how they drive the agenda in primaries," said Walker aide Stephan Thompson of Sykes and other conservative radio hosts in the state. "They are the biggest endorsement."

Walker would know.

He won the 2010 Republican primary for governor, and later the office itself, with support from Sykes and his unofficial counterpart in Milwaukee, WISN radio's Mark Belling.Scissors-32x32.png

Q&A with Ted Cruz: ‘Wisconsin is absolutely critical’ in GOP nomination chase

MADISON, Wis. – While the latest polls show Ted Cruz and Donald Trump in a virtual statistical dead heat ahead of next Wisconsin’s primary election, Cruz and his allies are going all-in on the Badger State.

On Friday, the Texas senator talked about what’s at stake in Wisconsin, why he believes a vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary, and why John Kasich just may be the “Kato” Kaelin of the Republican Party presidential sweepstakes.

‘CRUZING’ TO VICTORY? U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz campaigns in Janesville Thursday in front of next week’s Badger State primary. Cruz and his conservative allies have put a lot of time and money into Wisconsin. Will it be enough to beat Donald Trump?

Cruz spoke with Wisconsin Watchdog on the Vicki McKenna Show, on NewsTalk 1310 WIBA in Madison. The following is an edited version of that conversation.Scissors-32x32.png

Trump will be here Wednesday; speaking at my Alma Mater, St. Norbert College. A "non-violent sit-in"-type protest is being planned.

He will also speak at the university. That one could get interesting. He will be holding a town hall at a venue in which I have performed several times, Fort Howard Hall at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UWGB. That particular room is not that big, which surprises me; there is an auditorium which seats 2500 in the same building. Maybe they will move it, depending on crowd size.

HIllary will also be in town on Wednesday, speaking at Riverside Ballroom, a local night spot/supper club/dance venue.

I'll be glad when this primary is over, & we can fumigate this town and get back to our regularly scheduled lives.
