McKINNEY -- A 19-year-old McKinney man has been sentenced to death for murdering a Plano beverage store clerk last December. Jurors deliberated 9 1/2 hours Tuesday before returning the sentence in the capital murder case of Gustavo Garcia. On Dec. 6, jurors convicted Mr. Garcia in the shooting of Craig Turski, 43. The murder occurred Dec. 9, 1990, when Mr. Garcia and another youth robbed Warehouse Beverages at 521 J Place. Police arrested Mr. Garcia and 16-year-old Christopher Vargas last Jan. 5 at the scene of another Plano robbery and slaying. That day, 18-year-old Greg Martin, a convenience store clerk, was shot to death at a Texaco station at 2500 Avenue K in Plano. Mr. Garcia and Mr. Vargas were each charged with two counts of capital murder in the killings. Mr. Garcia has not yet been tried in the January killing. In June, Mr. Vargas, tried as an adult, was convicted of capital murder in the death of the Texaco clerk and sentenced to life in prison. By law, juveniles tried as adults cannot be sentenced to death.
