Bob Dole opposed Ronald Reagan in 1980, calling him a fringe candidate who’d destroy the GOP. That’s what he is saying about Ted Cruz now. “We can live with Trump,” said Richard F. Hohlt, a veteran lobbyist, reflecting his colleagues’ sentiment at a Republican National Committee meeting last week in Charleston, S.C. “Do they all love Trump? No. But there’s a feeling that he is not going to layer over the party or install his own person. Is he the wolf in sheep's clothing? Yes, I know we are angry at what is happening in America but have the majority taken leave of their senses? I know some are just desperate to go with anyone whom they believe will beat the Dems but this is not an episode of the Apprentice or a beauty contest. I also think many are afraid Trump will go 3rd party and again assure we lose. Jeff Sessions wrote large chunks of Donald Trump’s immigration plan (such as it is, as a two-page outline on Trump’s website). Sessions’ now-former communications director, Stephen Miller, moved over to the Trump campaign. But timing is everything, and Trump would like whatever boost he can get before Monday–getting even one Cruz supporter to sit at home for the caucuses in small, evangelical counties in northwest Iowa is a win for him. So I expect Sessions to make it formal sometime before Monday. Sessions’ office won’t say when, or even if, he will formalize his support, but his enthusiasm clearly stands out as far more overt than any other lawmaker’s. He knew everyone was coming to take shots at him. And it barely happened. What did happen was Cruz engaging with Chris Wallace in a way that reflected poorly on Cruz. Rubio outclassed Cruz and Cruz’s joke about leaving the stage fell flat. But then something happened. Cruz went silent. The moderators passed him by for other people. When they returned to him, they did four things. First, they asked Cruz, and only Cruz, about Obamacare. He gave a sharp, short, pointed defense of repealing it and explaining what the GOP alternative should be. Second, they asked Cruz why Washington hates him so much. I hate to sound like some of the FR Romney people, but I will not vote for President if Trump is the nominee. I see a real difference between the situations. Romney was leaps above Obama in the character category. I see no difference in character OR policy between Trump and Hillary. Why no one is bringing up the many many things about Trumps past, I haven't a clue.
