The video below shows Senator Cruz questioning Sierra Club President Aaron Mair on the alleged phenomenon formerly known as global warming. The video runs a highly entertaining nine minutes or so. It may make you curious about Mair’s background. The Sierra Club has posted a profile of Mair here.

My impression, possibly mistaken, is that Mair doesn’t know what he’s talking — that he is unfamiliar with the debate he seeks to shut down. Mair turns the exchange into something resembling a parody of a congressional hearing such as might have appeared on Saturday Night Live when it was funny when and when it might have gone after liberal orthodoxy. In addition to the obviously applicable categories, I’m filing this under Laughter Is the Best Medicine.

TED CRUZ QUESTIONS CLUELESS PRESIDENT OF SIERRA CLUB
time is short, start at 2:50 and watch for a good solid 30 seconds or so. The look on this guy’s face is priceless.

He doesn’t even know about the satellite data. All he knows is 97% of scientists, 97% of scientists, 97% of scientists . . .

Which, by the way, the study he is citing is nonsense. But you knew that.

Sierra Club would rather quote bogus 97% mantra than address facts

We all know that the now infamous “97% consensus” is based on shonky data analysis by John Cook, but that doesn’t stop the president of the Sierra Club from using it, even when it means a standoff with a Senator in a congressional testimony. Today, Texas senator and Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz questioned Sierra Club President Aaron Mair in a contentious testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Watching Ted Cruz and the hapless Aaron Mair, all I could say was "Oh my gosh." I would never want to disagree with Ted Cruz, although now that I think about it, that is what it's like if my son disagrees with something I've said. It's disarming to say the least when a good and well informed debater takes issue with something you've said, but it does make me go back and look again at why I thought the way I did. I do think that son of mine missed his calling and should have become a trial lawyer instead of flying for FedEx. rolleyes.gif

TED CRUZ DESTROYS SIERRA CLUB PRESIDENT’S GLOBAL WARMING CLAIMS IN SENATE HEARING

Presidential candidate Senator Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)96%

is showing Sierra Club President Aaron Mair to be an ideological hack and global warming alarmist.

At a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Cruz subjected him to a withering cross examination. Mair was reduced to stammering and frequent awkward pauses which he used to receive whispered advice from staff. He repeatedly referred to the discredited “97 percent of scientists concur” claim, and was unwilling to acknowledge valid scientific data that disproves the claim.

Mark Steyn, sitting in for Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday, called Cruz’s relentless questioning of Mair “a thing of beauty.”

Ten different times in his testimony, Mair claimed that “97 percent of the scientists concur and agree that there is global warming.”

“The problem with that particular statistic, which gets cited a lot,” Cruz rebutted, “is it’s based on one bogus study.”

The day began contentiously and Mair proved completely unprepared for the piercing questions posed by Cruz.

“In your written testimony you said that the science behind climate change and its effect on minority communities ‘should not be up for debate.’ I’m curious. For the Sierra Club is this a frequent practice to declare areas of science not up for debate, not up for consideration of what the evidence and data show?” Cruz asked of Mair. Scissors-32x32.png

Perth electrical engineer’s discovery will change climate change debate
October 3, 2015 11:00am
MIRANDA DEVINE

A MATHEMATICAL discovery by Perth-based electrical engineer Dr David Evans may change everything about the climate debate, on the eve of the UN climate change conference in Paris next month. A former climate modeller for the Government’s Australian Greenhouse Office, with six degrees in applied mathematics, Dr Evans has unpacked the architecture of the basic climate model which underpins all climate science.

He has found that, while the underlying physics of the model is correct, it had been applied incorrectly. He has fixed two errors and the new corrected model finds the climate’s sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2) is much lower than was thought. It turns out the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has over-estimated future global warming by as much as 10 times, he says.

Dr Evans says his discovery “ought to change the world”. “But the political obstacles are massive,” he said. His discovery explains why none of the climate models used by the IPCC reflect the evidence of recorded temperatures. The models have failed to predict the pause in global warming which has been going on for 18 years and counting. “The model architecture was wrong,” he says. “Carbon dioxide causes only minor warming. The climate is largely driven by factors outside our control.”

A couple of thoughts. Some of the people are really not used to actually getting questioned. They are used to people going along lock step with what they say and taking it as gospel. It is like some of the Democrat spokespeople that you see on TV. They just spout the Dem talking points. If they are taken beyond that, they are lost. They just keep circling back to the talking points. They get away with that with most of the media people so they are fine and they really don't have to really know the facts to be a spokesperson. Now when they get questioned by someone who has done homework and has actual facts, they are lost.
