The dead men you see are soldiers from the 53rd NC Regiment, which made the last charge on the fort. The 53rd Regiment was considered one of the best regiments in the CSA army at that time and the men who made the final night charge were hand picked, being offered a gold medal and 30 days leave if they could take the fort. They initially took the fort but quick Yankee reinforcements routed the men of the 53rd before they could consolidate their position. Those pictures were taken that morning after the battle.
