The first video shows Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Senior Director of Medical Services, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, describing how Planned Parenthood sells the body parts of aborted unborn children and admitting she uses partial-birth abortions to supply intact body parts. In this video, Mary Gatter, the Medical director at Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley in Calfiornia, discusses selling aborted baby body parts with undercover investigators posing as officials with a biotech company that acts as a middleman to sell aborted baby body parts to universities and other places that conduct such research. Gatter is a senior official within Planned Parenthood and is President of the Medical Directors’ Council, the central committee of all Planned Parenthood affiliate medical directors. Gatter discusses the pricing of aborted baby body parts — telling the biotech company officials that the prices for such things as a baby’s liver, head or heart are negotiable. She also tells the officials that she could talk with the Planned Parenthood abortion practitioners to potentially alter the abortion procedure to kill the baby in a way that would best preserve those body parts after the unborn child is killed in the abortion. The law itself doesn’t make a lot of sense: it is OK to sell fetal tissue, as long as you don’t get a very good price. This is somewhat analogous to a law making it a crime to sell heroin in schoolyards, unless you give the kids a discount. Would anyone who is horrified by the CMP’s videos be mollified to learn that PP’s costs are such that the organization is only breaking even after all? No. What we are dealing with here is not an accounting issue. The videos are, if not horrifying, certainly troubling. The sale of various baby organs–livers and brains, for example–is discussed in the most callous manner, over lunch, mixed with business and social chatter. The virtue of intact organs is recognized, and abortion methods are tailored to preserve them to the extent possible, given the necessity of killing the baby. In that connection, Dr. Gatter refers to using a “less crunchy technique.” Just about anyone not already immersed in the world of abortion on demand would be appalled by the callousness on display, which is why Planned Parenthood, the New York Times and their allies are anxious to denounce and suppress the videos. But that isn’t the whole story. Now that its trafficking in body parts has been exposed, Planned Parenthood claims this commerce is little short of heroic: the body parts are used in ground-breaking, life-saving medical research. This is a substantial claim, which I am not qualified to evaluate. I believe that whether fetal organs have any unique advantages in such research is hotly debated, and I have no opinion on the merits of that debate. What seems obvious, though, is that we are paying a price for our abortion culture. Many factors contribute to the coarseness of American life, but the ubiquity of casual abortion must be one of them. It was recently reported that among African-Americans in New York City, there are more abortions than births. Surely this is both a symptom and a cause of a pervasive disrespect for human life. If anyone doubts that the abortion industry contributes to the coarseness of American culture, all I can say is: watch the videos. I would conclude that, unless the use of aborted babies’ organs is really important to medical research–and I mean really, really important–all commerce in fetal tissue should be banned, and proper, respectful disposal of such remains should be legally mandated. If the use of aborted babies’ organs is, in fact, of great medical value, then I think the price paid for them is immaterial, but records of sales and purchases of fetal tissue should be maintained to facilitate ongoing assessment of the value of the practice. And proper disposal of fetal remains not donated for use in medical research should be mandated. That’s enough for now. CMP apparently has quite a few more Planned Parenthood videos, some of which we will soon see. So there may be more to be said before long. Over at what is left of the New Republic, Jen Gunter falls back on the obfuscation of medicaleze to pretend that a dismembered fetus isn’t a dismembered human being. First, showing that she is engaged in a political salvage job–rather than scientific–endeavor, she labels the Center for Medical Progress “anti-choice:” From, “The Many Manipulations of the Planned Parenthood Attack Videos:” The anti-choice organization Center for Medical Progress—which, in 2013, claimed tax-exempt status as a biomedical charity—has recently released two “undercover” videos of Planned Parenthood officials discussing post-procedure tissue donation. The group claims the videos demonstrate that Planned Parenthood profits from fetal tissue donation (which would be illegal) and that they are “haggling” over the price of “baby parts.” As an OB/GYN, I can tell you that neither of these claims are true. Gunter insists we call these dismembered fetuses, “products of conception:” (Snip) What Gunter fails to mention in her attempt to dehumanize unborn human life is that according to embryology text books–that’s science!–embryos and fetuses of our species are human beings. Moreover, these textbooks are very clear about when human life begins. Here’s a sampling (my emphasis): Human development is a continuous process that begins when an oocyte (ovum) from a female is fertilized by a sperm (or spermatozoon) from a male. (p. 2); … but the embryo begins to develop as soon as the oocyte is fertilized. (p. 2); … Human development begins at fertilization, the process during which a male gamete or sperm … unites with a female gamete or oocyte … to form a single cell. This highly specialized, totipotent cell marks the beginning of each of us as a unique individual. (p. 18) Keith Moore and T.V.N. Rather, their criticisms are based on evidence of another apparently factual truth; that PP not only dismembers fetuses, but sometimes does so in a way to be able to keep certain organs and tissues of these “products of [human] conception” intact and usable as so many crops. (Whether they “profit” from such actions remains to be determined.) Gunter is certainly free to endorse such actions. Of course I accepted the brains. It really wasn't my concern where they came from and how they were brought to me.” Really? That was his justification? To paraphrase: “Even if innocent human beings were being murdered” – the very ones society should protect, seeing that they are the weakest and most vulnerable – “their brains were used for a good cause.” Does this sound like Planned Parenthood?
