VIENNA (AP) — World powers and Iran have reached tentative agreement on sanctions relief for the Islamic Republic, among the most contentious issues in a long-term nuclear agreement that negotiators hope to clinch over the next several days, diplomats told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The annex hammered out by experts, one of five meant to accompany the agreement, outlines which U.S. and international sanctions will be lifted and how quickly. Diplomats said senior officials of the seven-nation talks, which include U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, still had to sign off on the package.

Still, the word of significant progress indicated the sides were moving closer to a comprehensive accord that would set a decade of restrictions on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for tens of billions of dollars' in economic benefits for the Iranians.

Iran nuclear talks to continue past deadline

July 7 2015

Talks between world powers and Iran on a comprehensive nuclear agreement will continue past Tuesday's deadline, the EU's foreign policy chief says.

Federica Mogherini told reporters in Vienna that the negotiations would carry on "for the next couple of days".

Meetings took place late into Monday night, with foreign ministers grappling to resolve outstanding issues and warning a deal was not yet assured.

EU official inadvertently exposes ridiculous state of Iran talks

Negotiations over Iran's nuclear program have blown past one deadline after another. The first six-month "interim agreement" was reached on Nov. 23, 2013, setting up a deadline for a deal last July 20, which was then extended until Nov. 24 only to be extended again.

The most recent super serious hard deadline for a deal was June 30, which turned into July 7 -- i.e Tuesday. Yet Tuesday morning brought news that the six powers and Iran wouldn't meet that deadline either.

Lest anybody think that this means another missed deadline, however, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was on hand to disabuse people of such a notion. "We are continuing to negotiate for the next couple of days," Mogherini said outside the Vienna hotel where talks are being held, according to Reuters. "This does not mean we are extending our deadline."

Got it? Continuing to talk past the deadline for a deal without having a deal in place does not constitute an extension of the deadline.
