In many places around the globe, Islamist terrorism is surging. While drone strikes have helped degrade core al Qaeda leadership, ISIS now inspires Islamist extremist groups from North Africa to the Middle East. Efforts aimed at defeating the terrorists and the broader political threat of Islamism poses to liberal societies have been have been hampered by definitional issues. One side of the debate is unable to differentiate between Islam and the political ideology of Islamism, while the other denies the existence of any religious context at all. In the meantime, religious minorities and dissenters are suffering and local economies are failing under the continuing twin threat of terrorism and tyranny. Join us for a discussion of what the U.S. and the international community can do to address the many threats posed by violent Islamism and what components should constitute U.S. strategy moving forward.
