IDF: Video shows Hamas on ‘an ongoing mission to kill and maim’

A video showing Hamas gunmen emerging from a tunnel, infiltrating an Israeli army base and killing five soldiers, demonstrates that Israel is faced with a cruel and unforgiving enemy and must continue Operation Protective Edge until all remaining tunnels are destroyed, Israeli officials say.

The video (warning: graphic content), filmed by one of the Hamas gunmen who participated in Monday evening’s attack on an army post south of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, was widely broadcast by Arab and Palestinian media outlets.

The IDF’s Gaza Division commander, Brig. Gen. Micky Edelstein, said Wednesday evening that three IDF soldiers killed in Khan Younis were blown up in an explosion at a booby-trapped UNRWA health clinic that housed a tunnel entry shaft. Enemy forces blew up “the UNRWA clinic on our troops,” he said.

However, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, the military unit that implements government policies in the Palestinian areas, later said that the clinic was last registered as a sensitive location three years ago, “and it hasn’t been since.”

The spokesperson said the site had not been registered then as belonging to UNRWA, leading to speculation that, perhaps, militants stole the sign and tacked it on the door, posting it as a security umbrella under which a tunnel could be dug.

Poll: 78% of Israelis Oppose Ceasefire in War Against Hamas

7/30/14

On the 23rd day of the IDFs Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, while the government is seeking a viable cease-fire, the average Israeli is saying just the opposite: give em hell.

The public is decisively opposed to a cease-fire, Sari Steinberg of the Panels polling firm told Israels Channel 2 News.

Theres been a shift since the beginning of the operation, according to Steinberg.

Just prior to the operation, 65 percent opposed a cease-fire, and now its at 78 percent thats a major jump.

Additionally, Steinberg stressed that only 14 percent supported a cease-fire, with eight percent replying not sure.

DU: UNRWA Christopher Gunness breaks down in tears on live TV after attack on UN school in Gaza

I have watched Christopher on Al Jazeera America every night and he pleads night after night for Israel to stop, for the world to demand that Israel stop and that children are being killed and that he can't even tell people to come to the schools for safety.

It is even more heartbreaking to see him break down. HOW Can our US Senators continue to vote for more money for Israel military to bomb and kill the people of Gaza ?? to kill the children sleeping in the schools? to kill the children as they play on the swings??

"In America we hear you Christopher Gunness, we hear you. Not enough of us, but many of us. We hear you night after night begging and pleading as we watch Al Jazeera. 100's of thousands of us are begging and demanding our US Senators stop giving aid to Israel. to condemn Israel.. we are protesting, marching, and getting arrested in their offices. We will continue day after day. We will continue to hold of posters of pictures of the Palestinan people... both alive and killed. We will continue to send in pictures to our Elected officials. Hopefully some of us will shut down the docks of where Israeli cargo ships are coming into. We Hear you, WE hear you...your reports are not in vain."

ENDING THE ISRAELI-EGYPTIAN BLOCKADE OF GAZA WON’T BRING PEACE

By Aaron Goldstein on 7.30.14 | 4:18PM

In an op-ed for The Washington Post, Minnesota Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison calls upon Israel and Egypt to end their blockade of Gaza to achieve peace.

Ellison, the lone Muslim in Congress, says he has visited Gaza thrice since 2009 and "has not encountered anyone representing Hamas". Given Hamas' iron grip on Gaza I find this very hard to believe. Ellison acknowledges he has met with officials from the UN Relief Works Agency (UNRWA). This would be the same UNRWA that has twice been found with Hamas rockets in their schools and then turned over the weapons back to Hamas.

Echoes of Vietnam: Israel surprised by Hamas’ advanced tunnel network

Israeli military intelligence is facing criticism for failing to comprehend the network of tunnels and other underground facilities built by Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Dan Pollak, co-director of government relations for the Zionist Organization of America, said early estimates of Israel’s operation to root out Hamas rockets has diminished the terrorist group’s arsenal.

Hamas‘ 10,000-rocket arsenal is now believed to be half that number.

“We’ll see when the war was over,” Mr. Pollak said in an interview, “but it is clear that the underground tunnel complex was far more extensive than Israeli military intelligence understood.”

Information that Israel Defense Forces reportedly obtained from captured Hamas fighters revealed that the group was planning to use several Gaza tunnels that extend under Israeli territory for a major attack timed with the beginning of the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashanah, on Sept. 24.

Gaza crisis: Israel, Hamas agree to 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire

July 31, 2014

Associated Press

Israel and Hamas agreed Thursday to an unconditional, 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza conflict, set to begin Friday, the United States and United Nations said.

The cease-fire was scheduled to commence at 8 am local time on Friday, and is expected to last for a period of 72 hours unless it's extended, the State Department said in a statement. Military forces will be expected to stay in place during the cease-fire.

In a joint statement, the U.S. and U.N. said they had gotten assurances that all parties to the conflict had agreed to the halt in hostilities.

NYT answers why not publishing photos of Hamas fighters

The response from the paper of record is simple and staggering: it doesnt have any.

Uriel Heilman

August 1, 2014

After my piece Thursday morning asking why mainstream media outlets arent showing photos of Hamas fighters in Gaza, The New York Times offered me this response: We dont have any.

(Snip)

Heres what Eileen Murphy, the Times vice president for corporate communications, says:

Our photo editor went through all of our pictures recently and out of many hundreds, she found 2 very distant poor quality images that were captioned Hamas fighters by our photographer on the ground. It is very difficult to identify Hamas because they dont have uniforms or any visible insignia; our photographer hasnt even seen anyone carrying a gun.

I would add that we would not withhold photos of Hamas militants. We eagerly pursue photographs from both sides of the conflict, but we are limited by what our photographers have access to.

Annals of the ceasefire
Scott Johnson
August 1, 2014

The supposed 72-hour ceasefire agreed to by Hamas has been breached in a major way by Hamas. As I pick up the news on Twitter, Hamas continues to fire its rockets. A Hamas suicide bomber emerged from a Rafah tunnel and blew himself up on IDF soldiers. Two IDF soldiers were killed in the attack.

And IDF officer Hadar Goldin of the Givati Brigade was kidnapped this morning. His fellow soldiers are hunting house to house for him. Kidnapping a soldier — that’s probably a red line for Israel, a red line of the pre-Obama variety — but we shall see.

The Times of Israel is tracking the events of the day here. Jake Tapper tweets a link to this CNN story that reliably gets it wrong. According to Tapper, the ceasefire “unravels,” which is one way of putting it. Hugh Hewitt lends Tapper a hand (below).

ABC News: IDF Armored Unit Changes Route, Doesn’t Fire with School Nearby
TheTower.org Staff
08.01.14

On Wednesday, ABC’s Terry Moran was embedded with an IDF armored unit going into Gaza to investigate a recently discovered terror tunnel. In the course of the brief excursion into Gaza, Moran saw firsthand the care Israel takes to avoid collateral damage.

Moran reported that one of the tanks “spotted what they feared was a Hamas militant team with an anti-tank missile.” (Video of Moran’s report is embedded below.)

The tank took cover. [unit commander Col. Tomer] Ifrah assessed the situation. A school housing refuges was located nearby – too close to engage the threat, Ifrah decided – so another route was taken.

The tunnel the soldiers visited was uncovered the day before when an armored vehicle sank into the sandy ground under what were once greenhouses, but now were sandy ruins. The IDF dug it out this morning.

Hamas hides in, under and around Gaza’s main hospital, and the media covers it up (Video)
William A. Jacobson
Friday, August 1, 2014 at 9:13pm

Was a Finnish reporter the only one to have seen rockets fired from close to Al-Shifa, or is she the only one brave and honest enough to tell about it?

Finnish-reporter-al-Shifa-hospital-rocke

There have been reports for years that Hamas uses the main hospital in Gaza, Al-Shifa, as a headquarters.

It reportedly has bunkers underneath, and uses the hospital itself.

'IDF will continue its mission according to Israel's security needs,' PM says

By JPOST.COM STAFF LAST UPDATED: 08/02/2014 21:49

Netanyahu holds press conference, addresses nation in Tel Aviv as IDF says that by Sunday, all of tunnels army knows about will be destroyed.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu held a press conference at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv, as the IDF began withdrawing its troops from the Gaza Strip.

"The IDF has neutralized many terror tunnels that took years for Hamas to build," Netanyahu said at the start of his address to the nation. "The IDF has had many achievements and successes since the beginning of the operation, hitting thousands of targets, including command center, arms factories, and terrorists."

"This is a complicated mission, in an urban, built-up area, with direct contact with civilian population," he said. "I am proud of our soldiers who are doing an extraordinary job. http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/Watch-Live-Netanyahu-addresses-the-nation-as-army-begins-withdrawing-troops-from-Gaza-369819

40 questions for the international media in Gaza
Saul O, July 31st 2014

1. Have you or any of your colleagues been intimidated by Hamas?.......

18. Russia Today journalist Harry Fear mentioned rocket-launching sites near his hotel. Have you noticed any terrorists or terror bases near your hotel?

19. How do you feel about Fear’s expulsion from Gaza, for tweeting about the rocket launches from civilian areas? Are you worried that you might also be expelled from Gaza?......

24. Hamas’ command and control bunker is underneath Al Shifa hospital. Is this worth reporting? Have you asked to gain access to it, so you can interview Hamas commanders?.......

32. Have you tried to interview any of the parents of the 160 Palestinian children who died building the terror tunnels?.......

39. Were you aware that Hamas chose to execute dozens of anti-war protesters in Gaza, and did you not consider this to be worth
reporting?

40. Is international media reporting from Gaza free from pressure and intimidation, or is there a real problem – and if so, how will you address it?
