Wine of the Week: McPherson, American, Brother’s Blend, viognier 2013

Texas is an unforgiving place to grow wine grapes: If the hail doesn’t get them, a freeze or an untimely rain will. The 2013 vintage is a prime example. Early in the year, a series of late-spring frosts killed off much of the budding fruit, particularly in the High Plains area, where the majority of the state’s wine grapes are grown.

Viognier was especially hard hit, so when Kim McPherson realized he would not have enough viognier fruit to produce the wine with a Texas appellation, he had three options: One was to produce a very limited amount, which would not make his banker or his customers happy. Another was to label the wine with an American appellation, Scissors-32x32.pnghttp://www.dallasnews.com/lifestyles/food-wine/food-wine-headlines/20140506-wine-of-the-week-mcpherson-american-brothers-blend-viognier-2013.ece
