Valin Posted May 4, 2014 Share Posted May 4, 2014 War Memorial pays tribute to firefighters for St Florian's Day Fleta Page May 4, 2014 When Rome needed to protect itself against fire in the third century it was an army captain now known as St Florian who was tasked to organise and train a group of soldiers whose duty was to fight fires. St Florian is now recognised as the patron saint of firefighters, and for his feast day on May 4, which is also International Firefighters Day, the Australian War Memorial paid tribute to those connections between the armed forces and emergency services. "Whilst we're not armed forces of course within emergency services, there's so many links in terms of our service to the community and many of our personnel are ex-serving officers of the [Australian Defence Force], Emergency Services Commissioner Dominic Lane said.
