I was visiting Story Sloane III’s gallery a few weeks back when we happened to come across a pile of negatives recently pulled from storage. Almost all of them were taken by his late father, Story Sloane Jr.

In the mix were a few negatives that had been damaged with time. I held one of them up to the light.

That 4×5-inch photographic record showed a scene of destruction and human tragedy. Smoke blotted out the sky. Cars sat askew with shattered windows and dented bodies.

It was taken in Texas City 63 years ago today. More than 575 deaths eventually would be blamed on the explosion of the SS Grandcamp at 9:17 a.m. Scissors-32x32.png
