Geee
UK Guardian: Rick Santorum has admitted authorising robocalls to encourage Democrats to participate in the Michigan Republican primary and to vote against rival Mitt Romney. Romney had accused Santorum of resorting to dirty tricks on the eve of Tuesday's primary. Speaking to Fox News, Romney said Santorum's tactic, which is legitimate but could be regarded as underhand, marked a new low in the campaign. "Senator Santorum did something today which I think is deceptive and a dirty trick," Romney said. An influx of Democratic votes could make the difference in a tight contest. Polls show Romney and Santorum neck-and-neck, with Santorum enjoying a late surge.
Geee
Dems and union bosses push crossover voting in Michigan LANSING, Mich. -- In the final days leading up to today’s Republican presidential primary in Michigan, there is considerable evidence that both Democratic Party leaders as well as some labor unions are urging a cross-over vote by normally Democratic voters in the GOP contest. Such cross-over voting is legal and longstanding in a state with no registration and a long modern history of Michigan Democrats going into Republican contests and vice versa. That it’s intent is to create some mischief in the four-candidate Republican contest appears inarguable. Whether this voting will be large enough to have an impact on the GOP race and what that impact will be is uncertain. In response to the reports of a crossover orchestrated by Democratic and union chieftains, State Republican Chairman Bobby Schostak issued a statement late Monday evening denouncing the practice. Noting “reports that several organizations are now attempting to undermine Tuesday’s election results,” Schostak wrote to “Fellow Republicans” denouncing “the malicious intent by these organizations to confuse voters, dilute the election results, and undermine the primary process.” Schostak called on reliable GOP voters to “send a message to any organization or campaign attempting to undermine the will of the people by remembering to vote.” The chairman’s strongly-worded message came days after Democratic State Chairman Mark Brewer in an email last week reminded his party’s reliable supporters that their voting in the Republican primary will not affect their ability to participate in the Democratic Party’s caucus in May. (Michigan Democrats have no primary and choose their national convention delegation through local caucuses throughout the state). http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=49817
Pepper
Good grief, not Robocalls? He's almost as bad as 666. The horror. I am sure Dems have never resorted to this tactic, nor other Republicans in other primary run ups.
Valin
Right Scoop: Romney whining about Santorum robocalls to Dems In reading the comments, it appears there are those who are having a little bit of trouble working up outrage over this, and sympathy for Mitt. How dare Santourum try to get democrats to vote for him! This has never happened in the history of politics.
pollyannaish
Without commenting on Mitt's response, I think this move is foolish on Ricks part, not to mention disingenuous. If this was the general election it would be different, but he is asking the other party (who believes by the way he would be the easiest to beat and they are right) to subvert the will of actual GOP voters in this state. You are cancelling out the votes of people on your own team because you are afraid of what they are going to do. I'm sorry but that is nasty and makes me distrust him. It would if Mitt or Gingrich did it too. It's one thing to benefit fr those votes nut to court them aggressively is another.

I swear, those little keys and my fingers are not a good match. I type faster than they can keep up, it auto corrects or I completely skip stuff. If I ever swear in the middle of my post...it's really not my fault! I was waiting for the doctor.
Valin
I thought getting Dems to vote for the GOP was the goal! Kevin McCullough 2/28/12 I know why “Mitt’s Knickers” are in a wad this morning. He’s getting an end-around run against his overly priced campaign that has outspent is biggest opponent 40 to 1 in his home state and he still may lose. He’s expressing this morning his “outrage” and “disgust” at a concept that signals something very important to anyone watching the race from a general election perspective. (Snip) *The Team Romney scorched-earth, spend big, and no-one-challenge-us, mentality has not brought about an especially strong argument for why people should vote for their candidate. Meanwhile, Santorum is talking about the current administration’s war on people’s freedom of religion, he is talking about the need to reinvent the American manufacturing capacity, he is talking about reducing the imposition of the federal government in to the intrusion of the life of the every day American, and he is blasting Obama on the governmental universal take-over of a person’s independent right to choose health care options. (Something Mitt can’t do with any genuine credibility.) (Snip) *Bold mine...and here we see a major problem many have with Romney, and speaking for myself...just one of many problems. octex
Good grief, not Robocalls? He's almost as bad as 666. The horror. I am sure Dems have never resorted to this tactic, nor other Republicans in other primary run ups. Pepper, I saw Bob Beckel on The Five this afternoon admit to being involved in dirty trick robocalls during one of his Dem candidate's campaign. They set up robocalls that seemingly were in support of the Rep opponent, asking people to remember to vote for him. They ran the robocalls all night long before the day of voting. People were so mad of being awakened several times during the night by the calls that they voted for the Dem candidate.
Pepper
@octex Thanks for that information. I suspect we'll see all that and more in October and November, right?
raygun
Of course he has; I live in Mi so I KNOW what or what not he's done while campaigning.
